Biography
He studied from 1940 to 1942 at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Kraków, which served as an informal continuation of the pre-war Academy. After World War II, he continued his studies at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts from 1945 to 1947. He worked as a professor at his alma mater from 1950 to 1975. He belonged to the circle of the most outstanding representatives of artistic printmaking in the 1960s, alongside Józef Gielniak and Jerzy Panek, with whom he shared a friendship, as well as other artists in this highly developed field of art, particularly in Kraków. Proficient in all printmaking techniques, he was particularly fond of woodcut. He typically created large-format works. He synthesized shapes and views into compact areas of black and white, sometimes with touches of color. In addition to printmaking, he was involved in painting and drawing, and to a lesser extent, poster design. He was a member of the MARG group (since 1957), “Krąg,” and the International Association of Woodcut Artists XYLON in Switzerland. His works are housed in the world’s most prestigious museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
