Large figure of an Indian temple dancer
India
19th century
Wood carved & polychromed
Height 100 cm
The dancer stands gracefully, her right arm outstretched to hold an attribute that has since been lost. Her upper body is clad in a painted-on dark top, the silk dress that once covered her hips and legs is missing. Around her neck she wears a necklace with a pendant, both made of inlaid gemstones. Her bangles are also carved. The polychrome setting was probably renewed some time ago, but again shows clear signs of repair and age. The outstretched arm has been reattached.
