Cast bronze, chiseled, patinated; height 75 cm, width 79.5 cm, depth 5.5 cm.
Poland, 20th / 21st century.
The bas-relief is a reduction of the plaster model of the famous wooden chapel by Jan Szczepkowski, awarded the Grand Prix at the exhibition in Paris in 1925. Appropriate patina makes the work cast in bronze perfectly imitate wood - the material of the original. The rectangular panneau retains an exquisite three-belt composition, with a central scene inscribed in a triangle: a barefoot Mary seated with the Child on her lap, crowned with a nimbus. On the sides figures of shepherds; in the upper zone kneeling angels, in the lower zone - an ox and a donkey. The closing element of the geometrized whole are diagonal shingles flanking the scene. On the lower strip the inscription: "AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH / AND DWELT AMONG US".
A replica of the Chapel is on display at the National Museum in Warsaw; the original, purchased by the French government, was placed in 1927 in the Church of St. Stanislaus in Dourges, France. Serving the Polish community in France.
