Lot information
The sculpture Šohaj in Slovak costume is the work of František Uprka (1868-1929), an important Czech sculptor whose work focused on rural motifs and folkloric characters from Moravian Slovácko. The statue depicts a young man in traditional Slovakian clothing with richly decorated trousers, clasped hands and a characteristic stance. The precise modeling of the figure and the detailed design of the costume underline the artist's sense of authenticity and the aesthetics of folk art.
The patinated plaster gives the sculpture a historical character and enhances the delicacy of the craftsmanship. The work is signed Fr. Uprka and marked ELK (European Literary Club), which published the sculpture. This designation demonstrates the cultural significance of the statue and its popularity at the time of its creation.
