Walter Spitzer was born in 1927. As a teenager he was sent to the ghetto and then to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he began drawing. Rescued by members of the resistance group after the war, he returned to the theme of the camp in, among other things, the album "Sauve par le dessin - Buchenwald," published Lausanne 2004. After the war, he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts from 1945. In 1946-1950 he designed theatrical sets, including those for "The Dybbuk." He participated in numerous exhibitions and salons. He mainly creates portraits, genre and biblical scenes, and also works in illustration. In his work he often returns to the experiences of war and the Holocaust.
