The work shows a symbolic representation of the Council of Trent. A group of bishops, here elevated to the rank of saints, debate an open book setting forth new reforms for the Catholic Church. Below, terrified men weep at their feet, presumably followers of Luther, whose teachings the Council of Trent condemned.
