Jozef KOWNER

Painter of Jewish origin. He studied in Kyiv and Düsseldorf. Between the wars he lived in Lodz, where he published the quarterly "Forma" in 1933-35. During World War II he was resettled in the Lodz ghetto, in 1944 he was sent to Auschwitz, and from there to other concentration camps. After the liberation of the camp, he was sent to Sweden for treatment, where he lived until his death. He created figural compositions, including Jewish subjects, still lifes, rural and urban landscapes.
