Salvador Dalí’s “Apotheosis” was created as one of six engravings for Ernest Hemingway’s short story “The Old Man and the Sea,” published in German by Manus Presse in Stuttgart. In the context of Hemingway’s story, the title of the work refers to the story of the fisherman Santiago, who, despite losing his catch, retains his experience and dignity. The final scenes of the story depict his return to the village and his reunion with the young Manolin. This literary motif, incorporated into the composition, belongs to the artist’s mature period.
