Władysław Jackiewicz (Podbrodzie in the Vilnius region, February 17, 1924—Gdańsk, March 30, 2016) studied at the Department of Painting at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (located in Sopot). He received his diploma from the studio of Prof. Artur Nacht-Samborski in 1952. From 1959 to 1981, he worked at his alma mater, rising through all the ranks of the academic career from assistant to professor. From 1969 to 1981, he served as rector. He was a member and activist of the Union of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP), and after its dissolution, of the Union of Polish Painters and Graphic Artists, where he served as president from 1985 to 1989. He was a member of the National Council for Culture from 1986 to 1990. He received numerous awards and state honors. He held several dozen solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad and participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the Young Artists’ Exhibition at the Arsenal, Warsaw 1955, as well as in subsequent editions of the National Exhibition of Young Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking in Sopot in 1957, 1958, 1959, the 4th “Złote Grono” Symposium in Zielona Góra in 1969 (Grand Prix), and the 43rd Venice Biennale in 1988. In the 1950s, he practiced a style of painting rooted in the tradition of colorism. Starting in 1973, he created a single series of paintings titled “Body,” in which he explored the theme of the nude in countless ways. He framed the figures so that only the torso remained within the composition, usually devoid of anatomical details. He painted luminous, synthetic silhouettes, utilizing the effect of the colored ground showing through a thin layer of glaze.
