Biography
She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the guidance of Stefan Płużański and Michał Bylina in 1962. She has had over 60 solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad and has participated in over 250 group exhibitions. During martial law, she was active in the independent cultural movement, exhibiting her paintings at events such as the regular art gatherings held at the Divine Mercy parish on Żytnia Street in Warsaw. One of her last major exhibitions took place at the Kordegarda Gallery in Warsaw (1991–92). Maria Anto quickly developed her own distinctive style. She created a fantastical world, rich in color, mood, and composition. Her paintings are distinguished by a mysterious atmosphere. The artist constructs a unique poetic vision. Her works are dominated by dark colors illuminated by isolated, vivid splashes of color. Ordinary objects take on extraordinary significance. Surrounded by an aura of mystery, they cease to be ordinary—they become beautiful.
