The first part of the Earth House trilogy topped the bestseller list in the United States for two years, won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 1932, and was translated into more than 30 languages. It returned to the bestseller list in 2004, when it was selected by Oprah Winfrey for her book club. Critics praised the novel for its realistic portrayal of life in China and its avoidance of stereotypes about the country.
The film adaptation of the book, The Land of the Blessed, directed by Sidney Franklin, won two Oscars in 1938.
