CUBISTIC STILL LIFE, ca. 1978
Oil, canvas; 70 x 100 cm
A student painting by the famous German sculptor and painter.
Michael IRMER
1955 Duisburg - 1996 Hamburg
Studied at the Düsseldorf Academy with Dieter Krieg, Gerhard Hoehme and Erwin Heinrich. In 1984 he received his diploma and was awarded the City of Düsseldorf Prize for Fine Arts. Since 1985, he has worked as an independent artist. Initially, his painting was based on studying nature and the great masters, e.g. Magritte and Braque. He made figures out of found objects and deformed them until they were destroyed. Since 1980, his paintings have become darker and more earthy. Even when he painted, he saw himself as a sculptor. He drew figures, cast them in bronze, created reliefs from thick layers of paint and scratched their outlines in oil. His stylized and isolated human figures are reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti's sculptures.
