Krystyna Piotrowska (Zabrze1949, lives in Warsaw) - visual artist, graphic designer, painter, author of installations and videos.
From 1966-1972 she studied at the Faculty of Interior Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, and then, from 1972-1975, at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań. After the introduction of martial law, Piotrowska and her husband, a Solidarity activist, left Poland and settled in Sweden. She continued her studies at the Grafik Skolan Forum in Malmö, Sweden, in (1985-1990). In 2001 Krystyna Piotrowska returned to Poland from exile. Her work is primarily concerned with themes of memory and identification - personal, female and Jewish. From 2006 to 2012, she initiated and curated the Project Próżna series of exhibitions on Polish-Jewish history and contemporary life. She has collaborated with, among others, the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, the Zamek Cultural Center in Poznań, the Arsenal Gallery and MOCAK. She has won many prestigious awards, including the International Biennials of Graphics in Ljubljana and Sapporo, and the Maria and Lukasz Hirszowicz Foundation Prize awarded by the Jewish Historical Institute. Her works are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the National Museums in Warsaw, Poznan and Wroclaw, among others.
