*The Catcher in the Rye*—a novel by American writer J.D. Salinger, first published in 1951. Shortly after its release, it became one of the most controversial books in the United States. The book sparked controversy, among other things, due to its exploration of themes related to underage sexuality and the main character’s use of profanity.
Although it was initially published as a book for adult readers, it is now on the required reading lists for high schools and colleges in all English-speaking countries. It has been translated into nearly all major languages of the world. It is estimated that approximately 250,000 pieces of *The Catcher in the Rye* are sold worldwide each year, bringing the total number of pieces sold since its publication to about 65 million. It was included on Time magazine’s list of the 100 best books published between 1923 and 2005. In a poll of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century, conducted by Modern Library, it ranked 64th.
