Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski, pen names Feranto and Mark Czertwan (born May 27, 1876, in Lucyn, Vitebsk Governorate; died January 3, 1945, in Żółwin, Brwinów municipality)—Polish writer, journalist, traveler, anti-communist, university professor, and political, scientific, and social activist.
Due to the fact that the author was a staunch anti-communist, Ossendowski’s books were removed from libraries in the People’s Republic of Poland, and his name was completely erased and subject to censorship; it was forbidden to even mention him in any publications.
“When I now look back on my life and see the path I’ve taken through Algeria and Tunisia—and especially when, in order to write this second volume of my North African journey, I pored over the notes I’d taken on the spot— [...] I realize that without the help and advice of a whole host of people, I could not have gathered these observations, facts, and impressions.” From the author
