Leaflet printed by the P.P.S. on the occasion of the May 1 festivities in 1915: "This year we are celebrating the May 1 workers' holiday under quite exceptional conditions. This international holiday, a holiday intended to strengthen the fraternal unity of the proletariat of all countries today takes place in the midst of a general war, in the midst of a terrible, unparalleled, life-and-death struggle between states and nations. Is it an illusion, then, to have this idea of international brotherhood, which has hitherto guided the May Day holiday, when workers of all countries across borders shook hands in the name of a common cause? No, not an illusion is this idea! But it is not the working class that rules today. Class struggles within society and wars between societies prove how relations today are far from fraternal harmony. The May Day holiday was a protest against today's social relations, it sowed the ideas of the future, heralded a new system without exploitation and internal oppression without wars on the inside. The war interrupted the work of peace, upset all relations to the bottom. The iron scepter of war bent everything and everyone under its rule. In such times, there can be no question of spole-zal reforms, in the name of which May 1 was demonstrated, the May Day holiday cannot be a review of workers' forces, because millions of people are fighting on the battlefields...."
