West Point (USMA) is the oldest military college in the United States. Established on the site of a fort guarding the Hudson River tract. The academy is located in upstate New York, on the Hudson River, a short distance from New York City. The site for the fort was meticulously chosen by George Washington and fortified by Kosciuszko in 1778. The site, according to Washington, was the most important defensive position in the entire U.S. territory, as the hills above the river allowed the Americans to control all traffic on the Hudson during the American Revolution and the War of Independence. Then, in the early 19th century, a military academy was established there.
The base with the general's name engraved on it was unveiled in 1828, and was created through the generosity of representatives of the United States Military Academy Corps. In 1913, thanks to the Polish community, a statue of Kosciuszko was erected on the column.
