Color woodcut; size: 820 x 530 mm; signed in pencil p. d.: Lutomski, 1978 imp. Author's print: X/X.
Lutomski (born 1934 in Grodno) was one of the most important Polish printmakers associated with the woodcut; he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (graduated 1960), later worked as a teacher and ran a woodcut studio, and held important positions in the environment of the International Biennial and Triennial of Printmaking in Cracow.
The invitation does not lead the viewer towards literalism, but works perversely: instead of a "polite" invitation, we get an image of tension, of entering an unknown space, of crossing the boundary between the external and the internal. Lutomski often built his prints on such a principle - he juxtaposed the attractiveness of color and the clarity of the sign with the anxiety of the form.
