Napoleon Mateusz Tadeusz Orda (born January 30/November 11, 1807, in Worocewiczach; died April 26, 1883, in Warsaw)—Polish draftsman, painter, pianist, and composer; author of over a thousand watercolors and drawings depicting views from the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He came from a moderately wealthy noble family; after graduating from the high school in Świsłocza, he studied at the University of Vilnius but did not complete his studies—he was arrested for illegal patriotic activities. He participated in the November Uprising, for which he was awarded the Gold Cross of the Order of Virtuti Militari. After the uprising’s defeat, he was forced into exile. In Paris, where he developed his artistic and musical career over many years, he studied composition under Franz Liszt and was friends with Frédéric Chopin. In 1856, following the announcement of an amnesty, he returned to his homeland. Beginning in the 1870s, he embarked on a grand documentary journey through the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The result of this work was the creation of approximately 1,000 drawings and watercolors depicting castles, manors, churches, and towns—architectural landmarks of Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. Some of these works were published in a series of lithographs titled “Album of Historical Views of Poland,” which today serves as an invaluable iconographic source for researchers of the region’s history and architecture.
