Biography
Comic book artist, graphic artist, and painter; co-creator of the Thorgal series. He was born in Stalowa Wola and grew up in Wrocław. Inspired by the French illustrated magazine *Vaillant* and the weekly *Przygoda*, he began creating his first drawings. After moving to Warsaw, he attended the High School of Fine Arts and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Prof. Jan Marcin Szancer, where he graduated in 1966. Meanwhile, in the late 1950s, he began publishing his own comics in the magazine *Korespondent Wszędobylski*, where he worked as art director. After graduation, Rosiński applied to the Sport i Turystyka publishing house, which was beginning work on the “Kapitan Żbik” comic series. In 1969, he published his first issue, titled *Tamara’s Diadem*. Shortly thereafter, he created three albums in the series *Legendarna historia Polski*—*O smoku wawelskim i królewnie Wandzie* (1974–1975), *Opowieść o Popielu i Myszach* (1976), and *O Piaście Kołodzieju* (1977)—at the same time, he also worked on *The Helicopter Pilot* and *From Wales to Brazil* (1975)—a comic book dedicated to the successes of the Polish national soccer team. In 1976, he took on the role of art director at the newly launched comic book magazine *Relax*, for which he also designed the logo. In “Relax,” Rosiński published, among others, *Nine from Heaven* (1976), *The Viking’s Defeat* (1976), and *Betrayal* (1977). In the magazine *Alf*, launched in 1976, Rosiński published the comic *In Galactic Service* (1977, 1978). In the mid-1970s, the artist launched his international career by publishing in the Belgian magazines *Tintin* and *Le Trombone illustré*. In 1976, he met Jean Van Hamme—together they began work on the *Thorgal* series, which quickly gained recognition—in 1979, the authors received the Grand Prix Saint-Michel, Belgium’s most prestigious comic book award. A year later, the series was published as a graphic novel by Le Lombard. Rosiński and Hamme created thirty-six graphic novels, published through 2018, which sold sixteen million copies and were released in several languages. Among the author’s other well-known works is *Yans*, created in collaboration with André-Paul Duchâteau and Zbigniew Kasprzak. The artist has received numerous awards in Belgium and Poland, including the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2006) and the silver medal “Gloria Artis” for Distinguished Service to Culture (2007).
