The graphic is a reflection of the painting entitled "Long Leg". The painting is characterized by simplified forms modeled by strong light, characteristic of Edward Hopper's painting.
Hopper's compositions often have an atmosphere of stillness and a pervading mood of solitude. This is true of his evocative images of sailing - a recurring theme in his works - as well as his austere depictions of urban life. Here, the graceful movement of the boat on the water expresses Hopper's attachment to the sea and his love of sailing, while contributing to the tranquility of the painting. Like many New York artists of his generation, Hopper sought solace after a summer in the city, heading to the New England coast. The cool tones and sense of calm in this work offer a respite from the heat and grime of New York. Thelocation is Long Point Light in Provincetown, near the artist's summer home in South Truro.
