Composition based on rhythmic play of vertical and horizontal stripes in contrasting colors - black, white and subtle gray. Illusionistic depth and dynamic visual tension were achieved solely through the manipulation of line and color, without reference to traditional perspective. This work captures the characteristic features of Stażewski's style: geometric rigor, striving for purity of form and the intellectual dimension of the artistic message.
Henryk Stażewski was one of the most important representatives of the Polish avant-garde of the 20th century, and one of the leading theorists of abstract art in Central and Eastern Europe. His work, consistently developed over decades, combined rationalism of form with visual experimentation and intellectual precision.
