The work belongs to an early, highly recognizable phase of Leon Tarasewicz’s career, during which the artist developed a language of rhythmic, band-like compositional arrangements. The composition is based on a repetitive, concentric arrangement of lines, evoking the structure of a field, a topographical map, the rhythm of nature, or an organic trace of a landscape. Characteristic of the artist here is the simultaneous decorative and monumental nature of the form—despite the graphic medium, the work has a distinctly painterly character.
Leon Tarasewicz is one of the most important contemporary Polish painters, an artist of Belarusian origin, a professor of fine arts, and a faculty member at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He was born in 1957 in Waliły, graduated from the Art High School in Supraśl, and then from the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he received his diploma in 1984 in Tadeusz Dominik’s studio.
