a representative of naïve painting. He was self-taught. He was considered the most intriguing contemporary figure among modern primitive painters. His paintings, filled with the strangest botanical specimens, were populated by mysterious, pensive figures. The animals took on decorative forms, though they remained lions, tigers, and elephants. The artist’s gardens were created under the influence of a longing for enchanted gardens, akin to visions of paradise. His paintings were exhibited abroad, including in Switzerland.
