Biography
In 1891, he arrived in Warsaw. He earned a living by painting portraits while simultaneously studying at Wojciech Gerson’s Drawing School. From 1897 to 1902, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Jacek Malczewski, Leon Wyczółkowski, and Jan Stanisławski. In 1900, he was in Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian for a few months; he also traveled through Belgium, the Netherlands, England, and Germany. His artistic education was complemented by visits to museums in Europe and the United States. He spent the years 1904 and 1925–27 in Palestine, where he taught at the School of Fine Arts and Applied Arts. During World War II, he was imprisoned in the Kraków ghetto. He was executed by firing squad in 1942. He painted mainly landscapes, architectural motifs, interiors, and still lifes.
