A very rare gold coronation token of King Augustus III.
It was produced by the Dresden Mint to commemorate the coronation of Augustus III as King of Poland, which took place in January 1734 at Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
In keeping with a long-standing tradition, tokens of this type were a symbol of royal splendor. They were minted for propaganda and commemorative purposes. Gold tokens were presented to high-ranking guests—dignitaries, magnates, and members of parliament. Silver tokens, on the other hand, were tossed to the crowd during the ceremony or the accompanying procession to demonstrate the future ruler’s generosity and benevolence.
August III’s coronation tokens depict the royal crown accompanied by the motto MERVIT ET TVEBITVR (He has earned it and will guard it).
This gold strike, weighing two ducats, is appearing in our auctions for the first time.
