tombac, 76.0 mm, 260.56 g. Medal designed by Everhart, struck to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luther’s birth (1483–1983). Obverse: an image of Luther wearing an academic cap and gown. Reverse: an image of a swan, a reference to Luther (Jan Hus, one of the first reformers, stated before his martyrdom that even if they roasted a “goose”— which was the Czech translation of Hus’s name, a swan would follow him. Luther is often referred to as the swan who continued Hus’s reformatory work). The reverse also features Luther’s seal—the so-called “Luther Rose,” a symbol of his theology—and the text (trans.): “I believe that on earth, in the whole wide world, there is no more than one holy, universal Christian Church.”
