Oil on Canvas

This spirited oil sketch captures the head of a youth in a moment of intense emotional expression, rendered with the vigorous brushwork characteristic of the circle of Peter Paul Rubens. The subject is depicted with a flushed complexion and a joyous, almost mischievous grin, tilted slightly to the side in a dynamic pose.
The artist utilizes a masterful application of impasto and fluid glazes to define the facial features, particularly the ruddy cheeks and the moisture in the eyes, which give the portrait a remarkable sense of life and immediacy. The soft, ruffled white collar provides a bright counterpoint to the dark, atmospheric background and the subject's shadowed clothing. Such sketches were essential components of the 17th-century Flemish workshop tradition, often serving as modelli or preparatory studies for larger history paintings. This work reflects the profound influence of Rubens' "flesh and blood" realism and remains a compelling example of the expressive power inherent in Baroque portraiture. Oil on canvas , 52 x 40 cm
