The body of the chest is rectangular, with richly engraved decors with motifs of stylized birds, acanthus leaves and plant ornaments on the front, side and top surfaces. A distinctive feature is the decorative hardware and engraving applied to the gilded brass surface, creating a contrasting two-tone effect. The top lid is equipped with a distinctive handle and inside it hides a complex locking mechanism with a multi-axis system, typical of Michael Mann's work. It is complemented by fine, hand-forged components and a central spring lock.
The chest stands on four spherical feet and is accompanied by the original key that matches the locking mechanism.
These so-called Minnekätschen were primarily used as personal jewelry boxes or gift items with a love meaning (Minne = love) and represent the ultimate example of small-format Renaissance craftsmanship.
Exceptionally well-preserved condition, functional mechanism, authentic key preserved.
