Official instructions of the Imperial-Royal Ministry of Justice, published in Polish in Lviv in 1897 with the permission of the Presidium of the Imperial-Royal Higher Regional Court. They were issued at a pivotal moment for the Galician judiciary. On January 1, 1898, the major Austrian procedural laws came into effect: the Civil Procedure Code and the Enforcement Code of 1896. These laws fundamentally restructured court proceedings and the enforcement of judgments. The instruction outlined the duties and procedures of the courts’ enforcement bodies, which were responsible for carrying out judgments and enforcement actions. The publication was intended for official use; therefore, it rarely left court offices, and only a few pieces have survived to this day. It is a valuable source for the history of the Austrian judiciary in Galicia and for Polish legal terminology of the late 19th century. It was printed by the First Union Printing House in Lviv, one of the most important printing houses in Lviv at that time.
Provenance: an autograph copy belonging to the jurist Józef Łukaszewicz, dated July 1898—evidence of the manual’s use in court practice shortly after the new regulations took effect.
This is an official publication of the Galician judiciary from the era of the great procedural reform, bearing the autograph of a lawyer from that period. A must-have for collectors of historical law and the history of the judiciary, collectors of Lviv-related items, and researchers of the history of Austrian administration in Galicia.
