Tétel leírása
A rectangular snuffbox of modest height, with gently rounded corners, contoured edges, and a lid mounted on a multi-jointed hinge. The body is made of silver, decorated using the niello technique and precise engraving. The interior retains its gilding in a warm, slightly pinkish hue.
Dimensions: 7 x 4.5 cm
Weight: 87.8 g
The top of the lid features an equestrian statue of Peter I, known as the “Bronze Horseman.” The ruler is depicted on a rearing horse, turned to the right, with his right hand extended in a decisive, imperious gesture. The monument stands on a tall pedestal shaped like a boulder. An inscription in Cyrillic is engraved on its surface:
“To Peter I from Catherine II”
“To Peter I and Catherine II”
The inscription is an abridged version of the dedication found on the pedestal of the actual monument, commissioned by Catherine II and unveiled in St. Petersburg in 1782. The monument was designed by the French sculptor Étienne-Maurice Falconet; this depiction has become one of the most important symbols of St. Petersburg and Russian imperial ideology.
The figure of the horseman is flanked by fancifully rendered city buildings. On the left is a multi-story building with arcades, a columned portico, and a tall tower section topped with a small dome or lantern. On the right is a structure with a soaring, tower-like form, juxtaposed with a lower wing pierced by arcades. These elements do not constitute an exact representation of the topography of Senate Square, but rather a synthetic panorama of representative St. Petersburg. They are intended to emphasize the urban and monumental context of the monument.
The scene is framed by a wide border composed of asymmetrical, undulating volutes, shell-like curves, and fleshy leaves. The ornamentation alludes to late Baroque and Rococo rocaille decoration. The background sections are covered with dense, fine stippling, thanks to which the smooth surfaces of the silhouettes and architectural elements stand out clearly against the matte background. The black niello is preserved primarily in the deepened contour lines, hatching, and ornamental fields.
The bottom of the snuffbox is adorned with an elaborate array of military paraphernalia. In the center is a large, oval shield with a diagonally hatched background and a decorative border. It is surrounded by crossed banners, spear shafts tipped with arrowheads, a cannon barrel, elements of weaponry, military headgear, and other war trophies. The composition has a radial and almost heraldic layout. The military motifs refer both to Peter I as a reformer of the army and the founder of Russian military power, as well as to the imperial character of the entire decoration. The panoply is framed by a rocaille ornamentation typical of the period, and the unoccupied areas of the surface are covered with a dotted pattern.
The side walls of the body are filled with engraved architectural compositions. Long facades are visible, featuring rhythmically arranged openings, porticos, pilasters, and roofs of varied contours. The decoration wraps around the snuffbox, creating a stylized panorama of St. Petersburg’s architecture. The contrast between the black niello sections and the bright silver gives this small object the character of a miniature, graphic cityscape.
The interior is smooth. The preserved gilding served both a decorative and practical function, limiting direct contact between the silver and the snuff it contained.
Three faintly legible hallmarks are visible on the inner surface. One of them bears the mark “84,” corresponding to the Russian fineness of 84 zolotniks, i.e., an alloy containing approximately 875 parts of silver per 1,000. Another mark is the city mark of Moscow (St. George), while the remaining one is the maker’s mark of a silversmith or workshop; the date 1827 is also visible.
The form, iconography, niello technique, and presumed fineness mark allow the object to be associated with Russian goldsmithing of the first half of the 19th century, likely from workshops in St. Petersburg. Comparable snuffboxes depicting the “Bronze Horseman” are usually dated to around 1820–1840. This motif appeared on Russian commemorative silverware intended for both domestic customers and travelers visiting the imperial capital. Similar examples also confirm the use of 84-fine silver and nielloed views of St. Petersburg on snuffboxes from this period.
The decorative program combines three fundamental themes: the figure of Peter I, the foundation laid by Catherine II, and the military and urban might of the state created by Peter. By commissioning a monument to her predecessor, Catherine II presented her own reign as a continuation of his reforms. The repetition of the dedication on the snuffbox lends the object not only a commemorative character but also a political and dynastic one.
Peter I the Great (1672–1725), Tsar and, from 1721, Emperor of Russia, carried out extensive administrative, military, and economic reforms. He founded St. Petersburg and made it the new capital of the state. In Russian imperial iconography, he was portrayed as a lawgiver, reformer, conqueror, and founder of the modern empire.
Catherine II the Great (1729–1796), Empress of Russia from 1762, consciously built her legitimacy by appealing to the legacy of Peter I. The commissioning of the monument on Senate Square was one of the most important elements of this program. The Latin and Russian dedications on the pedestal emphasized the symbolic continuity between the two rulers.
Étienne-Maurice Falconet (1716–1791) was a French sculptor associated with the European Rococo and early Classicism. At the invitation of Catherine II, he came to Russia, where he conceived the design for the monument to Peter I. The horse climbing onto the rocky pedestal and the ruler’s outstretched hand were meant to symbolize mastery over the elements, the strength of the state, and the steering of Russia toward the future.
This snuffbox exemplifies the high standard of Russian goldsmithing. Its particular artistic value lies in the combination of an elaborate historical narrative with the object’s miniature scale, as well as the use of niello in a way that makes the decoration resemble an engraving. The distinctive iconography of St. Petersburg and the Romanov dynasty lends the object additional collector’s value.
