Georges SPIRO (1909-1994)
Painter of Polish-Jewish descent, considered one of the most interesting continuators of the Surrealist tradition in post-war Europe. Born in Warsaw as Jerzy Spiro, he spent most of his life and artistic career in France, where he gained international recognition after World War II. Strongly rooted in the aesthetics of magical realism, his work is a fascinating dialogue between the subconscious, dreams and rigorously composed painting space.
Spiro has developed a recognizable visual language, in which the precision of drawing and smooth, almost enamel-like texture combine with an oneiric aura. His compositions - often populated by melancholic figures, dolls or fantastic architectures - exude an atmosphere of suspension and silence. The artist masterfully operated with perspective, creating illusory, deep spaces in which everyday objects acquire a symbolic, almost metaphysical dimension.
In 1948, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de la Jeune Peinture, which paved the way for him to enter major galleries in Paris, London and New York. The artist's works are in numerous private and public collections around the world, including in Israel, France and the USA. On the auction market, Georges Spiro is valued for his workshop excellence and unique ability to visualize the inner world, which places him in the circle of artists such as René Magritte and Paul Delvaux, while maintaining complete stylistic sovereignty.
