Janusz Szpyt studied at the Faculty of Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice in the studio of Professor Jerzy Duda Gracz from 1979 to 1981, then from 1981 to 1984 at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the direction of Professor Włodzimierz Buczek. In 1983, together with Piotr Naliwajka and Leszek Żegalski, he formed the "Group of Three," also known as the "Excessive Tercet." The group posted artistic manifestos in the "Bengal" newspaper they published. During the period of their joint activity, the "Tercet" artists ejaculated with large-format canvases depicting common scenes and figures from the Polish countryside in an academic form, often composed along the lines of traditional religious scenes or shots known from classical painting. Szpyt and other members of the group participated in the XII Festival of Polish Contemporary Painting, Szczecin 1984, the Salon "Figuration Critique", Paris 1986, the exhibition "Arsenal'88", Warsaw 1988, "Red & White", Warsaw 1989, among others. Szpyt's paintings refer to the tradition of realist painting. It is characterized by heavy, not avoiding verisimilitude, sometimes brutal expression and dark colors.
