René Magritte, a well-known Belgian surrealist painter, created the painting "The Common Place" in 1964. His works are often characterized by the use of ordinary objects in unusual contexts, leading to surprising and ambiguous scenes. Magritte aimed to "make the most ordinary objects shout out loud," transforming familiar, commonplace objects into unfamiliar and ambiguous scenes through surprising juxtapositions, changes in scale and playing with words.

Magritte's style is often described as magical realism or surrealism. His painting technique was illustrative and precise, allowing the content of his paintings to be clearly presented. Repetition was an important strategy for Magritte, not only in terms of motifs in individual paintings, but also encouraging him to create multiple copies of some of his greatest works.

The figure of a man in a bowler hat is one of the most characteristic motifs in René Magritte's works. This figure appears in many of his paintings, often as an anonymous, stereotypical middle-class "little man." The bowler hat has become a symbol of Magritte's surrealist approach to art and is often interpreted as a commentary on the loss of individuality in mass society.

Another recurring motif in Magritte's works is the image of a face or figure draped in fabric. The most famous example of this motif is the 1928 painting "The Lovers," in which a pair of lovers kiss through face veils. This motif may be related to a traumatic experience from Magritte's childhood, when his mother committed suicide and her face was covered by a cloth when she was pulled out of the river.

Magritte often used these elements to make the viewer think about reality and challenge traditional perceptions of objects and people. His works encourage reflection on what is visible and what is hidden, what is real and what is illusion.

"The Common Place" fits into this context, presenting everyday objects in a way that provokes surprise and reflection on reality and perception.
