Biography
One of the most internationally recognized British painters of the 20th century. Opponent of abstractionism. Supported the expressionist trend. He is considered one of the leading creators of figurative painting. The subject of his paintings was a lonely, alienated man, often in a situation of danger. His paintings are full of surreal perspectives, drama and theatrical expression. He repeatedly took up religious themes. He was inspired by the works of Rembrandt, Grünewald and Velázquez. He was a self-taught artist. Initially, he wanted to become an interior designer. He drew poorly, no one taught him classical sketching from a model. He became a painter under the influence of a Picasso exhibition in Paris. His friend Magia Hambling remembered him this way: "He was like a naked electric wire. His charisma literally shocked; from the moment he entered the room, it was impossible not to look at him. He hopped in place like a bird. And those amazing eyes."
